Question:
Recently came across an Avengers Comic Book, No. 1, dated 1968, published by
Gold Key and produced for ABC Television Limited in London, UK. Anyone have
any idea what it would be worth, if anything? It's a two episode comic...the
first one called "The Roman Invasion" and the next story is called "The
Mirage Maker". It's in fairly good condition with a couple of dog eared
corners, but otherwise in good shape. Any help is appreciated.
Answer:
-I recommend you check at "Avengers Illustrated"
(http://theavengers.tv/comics/default.htm), the site at
http://theavengers.tv/ "Devoted to 'The Avengers' comic world."
-Though I haven't bought a comic since around 1990, I was a longtime
fan! They just got so expensive and I lost interest in the stories
and characers. Seeing the Marvel Universe crumble broke my heart!
Anyway, I still survey fandom on occasion, so I can help out.
http://www.comicspriceguide.com lists the comic you mention.
There are 2 variations - one with a regular back cover and one with a
photo back cover.
The standard edition, in near mint/mint condition, is worth $375.00.
WOW! From what you describe, and I can't say for sure, it sounds like
the book is in "good +" condition or so, which should fetch a price of
$ 35-50 bucks.
The photo-cover edition, in near mint/mint condition, is worth around
$470, with the "good" condition price at around $45-65.
Of course its possible that this references some other comic. This is
just based on the info in the online comic price database.
This looks like a nice find. If you don't want to keep it, I bet you
could get some inflated bids on ebay!
If you tried to sell it to a dealer, he or she would probably rip you
off, then turn around and try selling it at the high grade prices
regardless of condition!
