Question:
I just put the Anti-Semite B.C. Sunday comic online for your
critiquing http://www.comicgeek.ca . Agree or disagree?
Answer:
-Well, not being familiar with Judaism and the menorah myself, this kind of
went over my head--apparently some Jewish groups are arguing that Hart is
stating "God has forsaken the Jews," or something like that, according to
the snuffing out of the seven candles.
I really don't have any opinion on this, as I don't have a particularly wide
knowledge or attachment to Christianity or Judaism. But this controversy has
given me a reason to educate myself on it.
-Both Jews and Christians have praised/condemned the strip, and most papers
heard of the uproar after their sunday sections were printed elsewhere.
Its a matter of interpretation. Some read as a hard line Christian destroying a
symbol of Judaism and blaming the jews for the crucifixion. Some say he is
merely tying the symbols together.
Wiley the poet, muses on theological sevens, the candle, the 7 last utterings
of Christ among these. The 7 headed candle has a flame snuffed out for each
sentence Jesus utters at his last (passover supper) leaving its centerpiece, a
cross, and showing the open tomb (before or after?) with wine and a loaf of
bread within (blood and body, or a nice nosh).
Hart claims no intent of harm, clergy forms lines on either side. Hannukah
Menorahs may have 9 instead of 7 heads, etc,....
