Question:
Can anyone suggest a good (and inexpensive) price guide to comic books?
I've a quantity I'd like to sell primarily from the 60's and 70's but first
would like to determine their current selling price.
Answer:
-*The* definitive comic book price guide is Overstreet's Comic Book Price
Guide, put out by the "Official" line of price guides. You should be
able to get this for around $12.95 in paperback at any bookstore such
as Walden Books. And, really, it's about the only well-known comic book
price guide.
Also, this price guide has a monthly magazine that provides an update on
the latest prices. A comic book shop will carry these updates.
By the way, you'll get a much better price on your books by selling them
to another collector as opposed to a dealer. Just like with any other
antique.
-When I collected them, over ten years ago, the accepted standard
guide was the price guide put out by Overstreet. I think it cost
avout $15 at that time, but it is invaluable. I still see them at most
major bookstores. Keep in mind, though, that prices (esp. on highly
collectible or "hot" comics) can change rapidly, and the proces are only
a general guidline. Also, if you sell to a dealer, you generally
get about half what the book says, as these are retail prices. Many
dealers will try to get them for 30 or 40%. Also, condition makes a
big difference. One particular comic I used to have was worth $600
in mint condition, and only $16 in good condition.
